Frazzled and Fatigued: Self-Care Tips Every New Breastfeeding Mom Should Know

Take Advantage of Hands-Free Pumping

As a new mother, you have enough to worry about without adding the stress of trying to juggle a pumping schedule. Thankfully, hands-free pumping can help make life a little easier. With a hands-free pumping bra, you can pump while continuing to go about your day. Whether you’re folding laundry, finishing up a remote work assignment, or playing with your baby.

Look for a bra that offers double-duty both for nursing and pumping to get the most bang for your buck. Shopping for a hands-free bra doesn’t have to be a hassle either. Check your favorite online marketplace when stocking up on weekly supplies, and throw a few different colors in your cart that can arrive with your order.

Stroll Through a Workout

Medical experts recommend waiting until your 6-week postnatal visit before starting or resuming high-impact exercise. Once your wellness provider has given you the all-clear, you can gradually work your way to your desired level of physical activity.

Exercise supports health and elevates mood. Work out while you’re with your little one. Grab the stroller and complete a series of strength and cardio exercises with short running periods in between.

Take Control of Stress

The state of your home can be a source of stress. Aim to keep your space as clean and organized as possible. Decluttering brings greater peace and health into your home, consequently reducing stress levels.

The nature of your job may also be stress-inducing. If you’re heading back to work, be sure that first and foremost, you are given the opportunity to pump throughout the workday. Consider discussing possible work options with your boss that afford you greater flexibility, such as an alternative schedule or remote work.

Frazzled and Fatigued: Self-Care Tips

Every New Breastfeeding Mom Should Know

Expectant mothers commonly immerse themselves in baby books to soak up all there is to know about caring for a newborn. What many don’t realize is you have to relearn how to care for yourself, too. Self-care looks very different when you’re a new mom, but it’s every bit as essential as before, and then some. Today, Leila Justice explains how you can utilize self-care practices as you adjust to motherhood.

Drink Plenty of H2O

Adequate water intake helps to maintain a strong and healthy body. The amount you drink also affects your milk supply. Drinking too little water can slow down your milk production and prevent your baby from getting proper nourishment. Stay hydrated by consuming eight ounces of water each time you feed your baby.

Sleep Like a Baby

Sleep deprivation is somewhat of a rite of passage for new mothers. Though your slumber will be disturbed for at least the first few months of your baby’s life, you can still use strategies to increase the quantity and quality of your sleep.

  1. Arrange for your partner to do one of the overnight feedings. You may still need to wake to express milk, but your partner can handle diaper changing, feeding, and putting the baby back to sleep so that you can catch a few extra winks.
  2. Develop good sleep hygiene. Maintain a consistent bedtime and wake-up time. Adjust the light, temperature, and sound settings in your bedroom to allow for optimal sleep.
  3. Resist the urge to scroll through social media on your phone just before bed. Bluelight and device stimulation can negatively impact sleep quality. Instead practice mindfulness in your new habits routine as a new mother 👩 👨‍🍼.

4. Acceptance: As a new mom learn to be mindful and acceptance of your new season in life stages. It help easy the responsibility in a psychological way instead of doubt your ability to stay calm and finding better solution of taking care of yourself and the new born.
